Among the most famous and most recognizable gemstones in history are a
number of large Spinels; found in crown jewels, treasure chambers,
museums, and collections all over the world. However, these stones are
usually not identified as Spinel, but as so-called “Balas
Rubies”. Another trend was observed in the use of Mandarin
Garnets. Here the market is split into two segments: one-carat Mandarin
Garnets are traded at a high price level, yet at moderate growth rates
of 15 to 20 percent. Stronger growth rates are observed with stones of
two carats and more, and from five carats upwards, the stone is
considered an extremely rare, very desirable commodity. They are
currently in great demand as solitaires in colliers. Two- to five-carat
stones are usually set in rings. Market observers forecast continuing
demand, especially since Mandarin Garnets perfectly complement the
color trend for the upcoming spring season.
